Volunteers needed to help build Katie’s Serenity Garden at Rydal Park on Saturday, June 28
Next phase for Abington Township’s first public serenity garden
RYDAL, PENNSYLVANIA (JUNE 4, 2014): On Saturday, June 28, volunteers from around Abington Township will gather at Rydal Park Continuing Care Retirement Community to help complete the transformation of a wild plot of land into the area’s first “Katie’s Serenity Garden,” an area of reflection and beauty. The community volunteer effort, led by Jenkintown-based charity Katie’s Foundation for Child Safety, will start at 9 a.m. and end at 1 p.m.
The event is intended to help complete the new serenity garden and raise awareness of its existence at Rydal Park so that any community members may use it. For the initial phase of the garden’s construction in August 2013, volunteers cleared ground, cut branches, and removed brush and debris to create the space for the new garden.
Members of the local community are invited to join in the effort on June 28. All who are interested should contact Daniel Kaye, board member for Katie’s Foundation for Child Safety and Director of Life Enrichment at Rydal Park, at 215-704-8270 or via email at Daniel.Kaye@presbysinspiredlife.org.
Katie’s Foundation for Child Safety hopes to create more such serenity gardens throughout the Township through similar volunteer events. The organization was created in memory of Katie Elise Lambert, who was killed at age three after a large, unsecured wardrobe cabinet fell on top of her. The organization provides education to parents, pediatricians, daycare centers and schools about the dangers of unsecured furniture to children.
Rydal Park is donating the use of the land for the garden, and its “Green Team” of residents who are dedicated to environmental concerns and improvement projects will also be pitching in to help in the effort.
Press is invited to attend and cover the June 28 garden-building event at Rydal Park. Contact Elise Brown at firstname.lastname@example.org or 215-825-9644 with any inquiries.
